iframe challenge

Well, not really, but I've got an idea and need to know if anyone thinks it would work.
I want thumbnails in an image gallery to open the larger image in it's own page - WITHOUT just opening the jpg, and without my having to make an HTML page for each large photo.
Do you think it's possible to have the thumbnail target another main HTML page with an iframe (where the photo will appear) centered, with a desired border that resizes according to the picture inside?
Might not work, it just kind of popped into my head on the way home a few nights ago.
Maybe it doesn't need an iframe...
Has anyone done something like this where you control the larger image exclusively from the thumbnail link?I want to figure out the easiest way to add photos to a gallery quickly without setting the sizes of each photo's popup window, and with a little control over the look of that popup.

Yah, but the thumbnail would open a new page with the jpg centered, with a border that resizes based on the size of the photo.
