I'm running a CMS that requires safe mode to be turned off. I'm hosting the site with (mt). They can't turn off safe mode due to security issues. I've been told you can run php as a CGI using .htaccess
Can anyone help explain this to me. I know nothing about PHP or CGI

Safe mode is an essential security measure in shared server environments to prevent access issues between users.
I don't think CGI is the best option here...
Have you thought about moving the site over to a dedicated server package with (mt)? I believe they'd be able to disable safe mode then. (Check by phoning them first though!)
A less expensive way would be to find another CMS that doesn't require safe mode to be off! Try these as a starting point: http://www.thefreecountry.com/ph…

I would suggest going to (mt) Media Temple for support and suggestions rather than Newstoday; not knocking Newstoday hosting support, but it's always best to go straight to the source for answers.

To quickly respond to fvvp; thank you for clarifying that safe mode is a very important feature to have active in the shared server environment.
A dedicated solution would be overkill though; we do have an affordable solution that allows for all the flexibility of a dedicated server. The (as) Appliance Server is a "virtual dedicated" server that allows for custom configurations and is perfect for running custom apps. More info here:

(mt) was great in assiting me in telling me the situation , I just didn't feel it was their job to educate me about the situation. Thanks all for the help.
