ASPEN, Colo. Feb 20, 2005 — Hunter S. Thompson, the acerbic counter-culture author of books such as "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," fatally shot himself Sunday night at his Aspen-area home, his son said. He was 67.
"Hunter prized his privacy and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family," Juan Thompson said in a statement released to the Aspen Daily News.
Pitkin County Sheriff Bob Braudis, a personal friend of Thompson, confirmed the death to the News. Sheriff's officials did not return calls to The Associated Press late Sunday.

im not entirely surprised, he had to have had some mental issues if you write a book like fear & loathing, regardless if you were tripping.

"mental issues"?!
I guess being a genius is a "mental issue"...

warheros - he wrote a whole lot more that fear and loathing. lot of good stuff. it was all mainly the gonzo style associated with fear and loathing. check it out sometime. great writing.

Ralph Steadman is one of my favorite artists, I have a book of his artwork with a forward by HST and other contributions.

yes, i know he's written more. as his quote on drugs illustrates, he had to have had some mental problems he has dealt with his whole life. normal people dont write like that. im not saying he wasnt a genius, he obviously was, but he did have issues.

warheros, you're way off base with "normal people don't write like that."
You have to have "issues" to choose the creative life, and after that the question of whether or not you are a "normal" person becomes pretty much ridiculous.

You have to have "issues" to choose the creative life,
--totally disagree with you. if you choose the creative life because you have issues, you will end up off-ing yourself. "issues" are exactly the wrong reason for being creative.

everybody and their mother has issues in this world.
But alias most truely creatives I met or respect do tend to be a bit off the wall, the one's who are not tend to be offering absolutely nothing to the realm.. most just boring copy cats. Not that things only work this way, but that has been my experience to it all.

superbaka, you misunderstand me. I didn't say "choose the creative life because you have issues," I said that it's a choice you only make if you have certain tendencies and predilections that are not compatiblle with other ways of forging a path.
Your response could be read as fairly disrespectful. I don't plan on offing myself, and I'd wager that most of the other people here don't, either.
