I really need a tip on which CMYK colour you'd advice to get a nice golden yellow without being too yellow or brown... there's no budget for a PMS colour for this client... any tips?

Watch the black levels on that mix. Black is a contaminent color and that mix could look dirty - particularly if you're running imagery alongside it. I'd use 100Y and 20 to 30M depending on how gold you want it. Refer to a CMYK mix book - you can pick one up for $20 at the link below.

yeah def keep that black out of it... just gonna muddy it up.
bonseff's mix looks good... use the cyan to get the darker value instead of black. i find PMS colours when converted to CMYK always have too much black in them.
i'll check on of my old files now that i'm at home... i'm sure it will bretty close to bonseff's.

5just a little bump of black to pull back on the yellow... use that or Bon's and your golden.

too much cyan and it will take greenish tones

just do tests to find what mix works for you

Wow, my post pulled you off the couch? The power of the internets is strong. I too was pulled from the couch to post.
Too true, color is subjective. Just pointing out that black (and cyan by clone) are strong colors when added to mixes. Just a preference, but when mixing CMYK, I try to lay down one ink at 100% to give the sheet a full coat of ink. No dot.
