4th form dance.
I think she knew I was into her. She used to come down to the beach to watch us skate in the pools, but would never talk to me. In fact I remember she used to look away whenever we made eye contact. We rode the same bus, had most of the same classes, and sat near each other at lunch.
But we each had different peer groups - I was a skater and she was a preppie. My idea of a good night out was sliding some rails and getting pissed, hanging outside the Circle K - her's was a rental video and ice-cream float party with girl friends.
I wasn't supposed to be at the dance. If I had had my way I would have been at the second RUN-DMC show of the week with some friends, but the night before I had a call from Tom, asking me to go to the dance. He had asked this girl and she said she would go if he found a date for her friend. Enter sucker.
She was nice enough - not hot pretty, but cute, in a pigtail and dungarees kind of way.
So I danced, fast and slow, drank some punch, which nobody remembered to spike. Went outside to sneak some smokes with people I never really talked to. It was ok.
You're standard run of the mill songs for the time...Phil COllins...Chris DeBurgh...Crowded House...INXS...Van Halen...that sort of thing.
Cut to the last song of the evening. I'd just come back in from talking to some dude about how he'd just superglued all the door locks on the 5th floor. Eager to leave and get downtown to catch what was left of the show, as I went to grab my jacket and skateboard, the opening bass to 'With or Without You' started. I felt a tap on my shoulder, and a quiet voice asking me to dance.
She looked like a fucking angel in the dress she was wearing, and I swear she was glowing, beaming...beautiful. I couldn't talk, couldn't even move. My legs turned to jelly as she grabbed my hand and led me to the dance floor. At first we kept our distance but as the song progressed she drew me closer.
"I've been wanting to talk to you for so long", she said, "but never had the nerve".
"So why tonight?"
"It just seemed right"
And it was.
We saw each other a few more times after school, went to movies, held hands and kissed. But that summer she moved back to America, and as the weeks passed, our letters to each other dwindled, until she was nothing more than a fond memory of a good time.

As I drew my face closer to her neck I remember taking a deep breath and imagining that if there was a heaven...that's what it must smell like.
She was wearing 'Colors' by Benetton, and nothing had ever smelt as magical or pure. Her hair smelt like a thousand fields of tulips, and I later discovered she normally washed her fair with 'Finesse'.
