Yeah there's no war anymore.
I went to Hue and it was really cool old Chinese like city. There are many historical temples within the vicinity that are really interesting. Love that city. And if you want cheap clothes go to Hoi An. Also a very nice and low key town.

sorry Vespa, I have lost my journal from my south east asia trips :(
But I asked around my old travelling friends and their suggestions were:
Ha Long Bay (which is stunning.. you can do it on an old steam boat if I remember correctly but thinking about it it may be too north for you)
Cu Chi tunnels. They were amazing but very disturbing, likewise the American War museum.
Mekong Delta, do a tour for a few days... this is amazing. We went into Cambodia this way.
I had thought of loads of other places but was working till 5 this morning and it seems me brain ain't working properly!
The best thing to do is when you arrive in Ho Chi Minh go for a wander, take it all in and enjoy.
You'll probably be taken to the 'Koh San road' of saigon (Pham Ngu Lao I think... and you'll see loads of Sinh Cafe tour shops. They'll have all the tours and places you will need)
It's an amazing city and the best way to get used to vietnam.. if you can handle the chaos (or even enjoy it!) you'll do fine!!
Oh there is an amazing school not far from the tourist place that is a performing arts based place for orphans. We helped out there for a while and it was brilliant. That was one of the highlights for sure, what was it called!?!
Shit, I can't believe I lost my journal....

I am trying not to think about it!
I reckon I lost it somewhere between here and australia about three years ago. All I have to do is re trace my steps.....:(I am gutted because I can't remember the name of the penisular in na trang we stayed on.
It was the best part of vietnam I went to.
Swimming in phosperous algae is like flying in the stars (and it made me giggle like a girl!)

i'm going tomorrow! (i hope)
i've got standby tickets from paris tomorrow afternoon, but i couldn't get the tickets sent to me in london and the paris office doesn't pick up their phone, so i've got a 6 am flight to charles de gaulle, gotta go into the city, find the vietnam airlines office - pick up my ticket (god i hope it's there!) and if i make it onto the standby flight then off to saigon i go!
weeeee wish me luck

Nha Trang is a great beach city north of Saigon. A bit touristy but it takes you to better parts. Take a tour of north/central nam if you can, you'll be blown away by the scenery.
