from what i've heard and read, it is mainly a security/feature update, they aren't making changes to the render engine.
meaning, no improved css or xhtml support.
firefox, mozilla, konqueror, opera, etc...are still your best choices for web browsing.
ie will continue to be a poor browser.
- toastie0
it's gonna be for longhorn.
- BobaFetus0
It's gonna be Shit 7.0
- zedvox0
people still use IE?
- yarsrevenge0
yes, matter of fact, it is still the most used browser. You just have your head up a mac's ass.

some light reading for everyone:

http://www.quirksmode.org/blog/a…
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive…
http://www.sitepoint.com/blog-po…while security is a good thing, it is unfortunate ms doesn't care about the web.
it is hard for me to find the good in a release spurred only because they see their market share drop to firefox.
ms doesn't care about developers, designers or users, and that is pretty evident here.
no mac version. only xp sp2 will handle the new version. it is only a beta to drum up support for their new p.o.s. operation system; which is too little too late, imo.
i try to look past fud and fluff and not be a pure linux zealot...but it's difficult when ms pulls things like this out of their ass.
:)

I love how people assume IE haters are only mac users. They tend to forget that IE is the most used browser because when people bought their PC's at Walmart that was what was on it...
and for a company that is the richest in the world, that hqas 90% of the people using their OS, that has the leading share of browser use- you would think that they would give a shit about their customers.. but you see the customers are a dime a dozen so they hardly give shit.IE is being focused on ONLY because of Firefox's growing popularity, MSN search is there to complete with Google, and of course the OS is always ripping Apple... rarely do they offer their users benefits just for their reputation as a great tech company.
Even with their new "virus" protection idea- they act like they are doing the user a favor-
"Hey user we built a unsecure OS and browser but as a SPECIAL offer to you we decided to help fix it"
Oh... thanks for the love Microsoft- fixing your own fucking problems, what should we do now- bow?
The fact that 90% of the world is okay with this being a computing experience is almost fucking laughable...

the ironic thing is, most pc users who consider themselves "computer illiterate" hate windows.
even my stupidest user in the office wishes she could use something better, but she isn't confident enough to learn how.
these users have a hard enough time using windows...anything else makes them feel even more idiotic.
just because ~90% of the world "uses" windows...doesn't make them supporters.
it just happens to be what was given to them and they're not skilled enough to switch on their own.

where do you muster the energy and motivation to continue beating this dead horse? each of you!
- puter0
If the biggest bank in the world built a safe that 15 year olds with skills could crack open no one would put their money in that bank.
If A car company built a car that after driving it for a few months the tires fell off and the engine started smoking no one would buy or use that car.
But Microsoft, the biggest and richest company in the world releases the OS with hundreds of holes, neglects the needs and security of the users who made them rich in the first place- and what do people do? Use it, and except that this is just how it is, usually because they know no different or are so proud of themselves that they saved $100 off the machine that runs it with a Dell coupon.
Again, almost laughable, not unlike AOL users.
When was the last time there was anything but negative press about MS? When was the last time the introduced anything worth computing except for service packs and security patches?
- shutdown0
well shit on me, i have to agree with the above!
- clone0
why even have this thread firefox is the future
ie 7.crap isn't going to prove anything except gates is a follower
- sparker0
the dead horse needs to be beaten until people either grow some balls or at least some intelligence and swtich to linux or unix (mac osx for most).
what is interesting about the amount of windows users is that more than half of them are on outdated, unsupported versions.
win98, nt and 2k are the predominate systems in use...not xp or 2003. ms has already stopped supporting those systems; for the most part.
ms is actually hurting their most broad user group by trying to force expensive upgrades.
it's unfortunate that these are the systems most often targeted and susceptible to infection and corruption.
- SteveJobs0
shine on you linux evangelist, for you can do what i cannot:
give a rats ass.
- clone0
computers are toasters i dont care about the os i care about getting the job done
anyone devoting time to taking sides should re evaluate thier work schedule

"win98, nt and 2k are the predominate systems in use...not xp or 2003. ms has already stopped supporting those systems; for the most part."
They still support 2000 which I am using. 98 was crap, but 2000 is their best system ever. XP is basically 2000 with fancy add-ons, like changeable skins, icon sets and computer hardware expansion limits.
- sparker0
support for 2000 ends june 30, 05.
a lot of it has already tapered off. no new service pack releases, no major updates, only security fixes.
and, no, there are some differences between kernels.
- fusionpixel0
not everyone needs a faster rendering engine
not everyone needs tabs
some people dont even know what tabs are
some people out there thing IE is the internet
as some others thing YAHOO is
in reallity no matter what we say here, most of us try to keep up with the new thrend or the newest took, but not everyone has time to update or find a better browser just simply because they are not at their computer for a living just as we are.
