a buddy of mine has offered to sell me a dual 500mhz g4 (in the carbon case) desktop for REAL cheap...right now it's running os9.2 -- my question is: has/is anyone running osx on a similar machine? if so, does it run well?

i would imagine you could since i have a friend that has tiger running on an 800mhz

dude. i used to run it on a g4 400.
this aint' 1996 and osx aint nebulon or whatever the fuck nasa's program is.

you could run gentoo or yellowdog linux on it.
mmmm.

i have a g4/400 from like 4 years ago and osx works like a dream with zero problems.

why not?
ofcourse it does, i have a dual450mhz for years and os-x runs smoove.
you might want to get some good RAM though, I have 1gB RAM in mine.

You might think about bumping up the video card too, if you're going to be doing DV or art.

ish... i ran AND worked with OSX on an old G3 300mhz for 2 years, you'll be fine.
just stuff it with as much RAM as you can afford, and maybe consider a video card upgrade if/ when you migrate to Tiger as its rumoured to rely heavily on vRAM, not CPU power.

i run osx on a 500mhz g3 powerbook with 512mb ram and have no problems whatsoever...even with pshoppe and illustrator running at the same time...i even used to edit video and animate with ae on it and it's not too bad

I use a dual450 with 1.5GIG of RAM as my main machine, and run Panther like a dream.
I use Photoshop, Illy, BBEdit, Flash, InDesign, Quark, and Painter all day- everyday-

dual 867mhz w/ osX 10.3.5.
runs awesome, rarely crashes and is super fast. the dual never really worked in os 9, I believe but i may be wrong

crashes??? I don't even remember the last time my iBook crashed. I think maybe last year some time.
I have programs crash, but that's just cuz its a little 3rd party app.

Mhzzzzz.

had a dual 500 G4 with OSX.2, and a dual 867G4 with OSX.3... no problems...

I have 10.2 on an old 250mhz G3 Powerbook. Advantages of modern system and OSX apps and compatibilty with all sorts of things more than make up for it running sorta slow...

well I dont use it much...have 3 other Powerbooks (I have to sell some) and nobody wants to buy it...how long until its a 'classic'?
