big mistake

let's just say i accidentally undid a lot of work. work that i didn't do to begin with. i did it with good intentions, i just basically changed some things that i thought were wrong. now i'm realizing that the "mistakes" were actually supposed to be there.
the thing is, it actually took a lot of time to "fix" these things. and the person who did them to begin with was my boss. i don't know how to put it back, it's specific technical stuff i don't know about. but i could guess.
so the question is : do i tell my boss that i undid a lot of his work (this is tedious work he HATES to do)? or do i try to repair it myself, with the risk that i don't do it all correctly?

what exactly did you 'undo'?
- warheros0
grab the original file from someone else. YOU SHOULDVE SAVED AS!!!!!
- dippy0
do not try and fix it yourself.

brush it under the carpet .

it's not working on a file. it's sort of like using a database (it's an interface specific to our company) and mapping certain items to other items.
if i try to fix it (most of it) i will have a good idea of what i am doing, and then i can tell my boss about the few things i couldn't fix?

bodge it back somehow and take tomorrow off.
ahh fuck it take the entire week

Fess up, remember, honesty is teh best policy...

Ouch! come clean and offer to help sort it out. Honesty is always the best policy - after all, you were only trying to help (!)
next time, backup...

i think telling your boss, and offering to fix it would be the way to go.
atleast that would open the door to ask questions if you came across something you didn't understand.

tell him you mess up, he knows what he is doing, he might get mad for you messing up but be glad that you are working on something you know how to do rather than wasting time trying to fix something you dont know how.
- anzelina0
yeah, i wish i could have backed up, i definatley do that whenever possible, but this is a web-based interface, it's impossible to back it up.
what if i fix as much as i know for sure i can positively fix, and then tell him about the rest?
- tkmeister0
check the back up maybe the way to go.
don't you guys back up the server every night??

blame someone else

email your boss this:
they, are you going to send me the file you wanted me to work on? we're running out of time.
he'll come back:
i thought i did?
you say:
nope. dumbass. send it over.
whalla.
- ********0
Tell him a big boy did it and ran away.
- anzelina0
it's not a file, and no, we don't back up the server even if it was a file-related problem.

if your boss is cool, i would tell him straight up. else, just like you mentioned, if you have time, try and fix it and explain to him that you did something wrong and your trying to correct.
for me, have screwed up before, i usually just march right into my bosses office and just say, "i screwed up" big and proud. and just explain what my intentions were and immediately move the conversation to fixing the problem.
if you realize you made a mistake your halfway to fixing it, most of the time a "crisis" is never as serious as you think...
good luck!

Say that you thought it was shit when you started and that the person who made it before was a twat

the thing is, i am scared of my boss! i know he will be cool eventually, but he likes to curse and call people idiots and that sort of thing. and he really detests this work. so if i tell him he has to do it over again he will be PISSED.

(Feb 15 05, 08:02)good call. i actually did think that someone else made all of the 'errors' that needed fixing.
