is it possible to have my music ONLY on my ipod (and still access it via itunes) and not keep all the files on my mac? ideas?

well, yeah. of course.
just copy everything to your ipod and clean out your itunes music folder. done and done.
you could also set your itunes music folder to be on your ipod under the 'advanced' preferences, so that when you import a cd it goes straight to your ipod.

that what i thought... but would that double up every file up if it synced? will the ipod be able to play direct from the itunes folder indepedantly from itunes or will it have to copy the music into someplace else on itself?
am i making myself clear.. sorry..

uh...
if you don't want any music on your compuer and just on your ipod, i would think you'd turn syncing off. otherwise it'll start copying/deleting stuff.
when you connect your ipod to your computer, it shows up as a type of harddrive in itunes. you can drag and drop anything you want into the ipod in there. and of course the ipod will still be able to play independently.

I have a phonocable runnning from the dock into the line-in of my computer. That way I don't even have to run iTunes to listen to music at my computer. Saves RAM and I don't keep music on my harddrive, but just have back up DVD-R's.

so just by playing into the line in it comes out the mac, or do you need to run some software?

turn off syncing, switch to update songs manually, then your song will not be grayed out in iTunes and your stuff will not double up.
