to those of you who does it (i.e. montgomery), how does the whole thing work?
do you contact the band first? how bout the budget to print?
a dumb question but wanna find out.

isnt gigposter just a place to post your posters and flyers from gigs?
- usrper0
yea, was just asking gigposters in general
- Montgomery0
iDp is right.
- usrper0
rite. it actually has nothing to do with the site.
- Montgomery0
Oh. hehe.
I've done posters for two bands: The Rounders and Green Lemon (both local bands).
After I saw The Rounders live I worked on a poster and e-mailed it to each member of the band. The reason why I was doing the poster was to include it in my portfolio for college. Because of that I didn't ask for any money, instead I asked for CD's. I left the printing up to them.
The same is true for Green Lemon. Heh, i'm not sure how helpful that was but... whatever.
- usrper0
yea ok.
i guess for small bands its easier.. so usually you just do it first and then try to send it to them and see what happens rite..
- Montgomery0
Thats what i've done. I send it to them before I finish. Good luck.
- usrper0
before you finish?
- Montgomery0
Yes. I don't want to work too hard on making the text look right (for example) incase they aren't interested. If they reject it at this stage I guess I would just change it around for another band..
- usrper0
haha rite.
thx!
- iDp0
usper ever since you started this thread I've been glued to gigposter, there is some really really nice work on there, including but not limited to our own Montgomery.
Cheers guys!
Mont that server space is still yours if you want it.

Montgomery: Very nice posters!
- Montgomery0
Thanks. I'll e-mail you iDp. My name is Dylan Montgomery, so if anyone would rather call me Dylan then go ahead.

Its fun as hell but you dont make jack. Even the guys who are killing it and turning out the nicest stuff are barely breaking even in terms of initial payment. But if you can make a name for yourself or work with good bands reselling your work is one way to make some cash. Its super fun though and a good release from the tedium of more corporate design..
We offered venues a first poster at cost and then started making a little more than cost after that.. But put in design time and printing supplies and time and your making a buck an hour. But the hours are fun.
- usrper0
nice. so instead of the bands you went to the venues?
- robswift740
Yeah, unless a band wants a specific poster group to do their tour posters, like Modest Mouse, who only works with a few poster artists.. Generally you will be dealing with the venues.. sometimes the management companies.. The venues will tell you that they cant pay you much, but weve had better luck getting money out of the promoters/ band management than anyone else.
But ultimately I think the venues are a good place to start. Or if you have a friend in a band, ask him to request the promoter use you to do the poster for a show. Do a sick poster and the promoter will start asking you for more..
