"Commercial graphic design, when it is full of the vulgar and timely energy of the marketplace, sometimes achieves an artful vitality absent in "fine" art. But when it consciously aspires to rise to the level of "fine" art, it often mimics its most sentimental or decorative forms."

well played Mr.Rand

I found it strange that there was some assumption in this thread that a designer would necessarily WANT to be an artist. You can be incredibly creative/innovative as a designer without having to call it 'art'. Dammit.. design can be so much more important than 'just art'.
or something...

to me they are two strictly separate things.
period.

Good point ribit. They both require (usually visual) creativity, and I think that's where people get confused.

graphic design is not art, but art could be graphic design. the reason being that the purpose of graphic design is to communicate to the masses. Art may do this, but art is many times personal, it need not communicate to anyone but the artist.

well i am not going to deep in the discussion now, but design is aimed to communicate as effective as possible.
while art leaves more open for interpretation, ie the way it communicates relies more on the audience then the creator.
Design demands the skills and communication knowledge of the creator to bring over the message in a predefined manner.

most of this discussion hangs on words that have vague/broad meanings. Maybe 'fine art' would be more descriptive? For example: "design is way more important than fine art", or "fine artists have no idea about good design"

maybe the line between the two lies in the individual from either party feeling unable or just not wanting to say they are the other
fear of the artFag/artWhore
if neither cared this discussion wouldn't be happening

mmh, i think ribit & fate are right in why people get confused between the two.. also the avg person doesnt quite know what a graphic designer is..
btw,
hej Joost, will you be putting the Fusedboard back up anytime soon? or did i miss out on something?

I just hate the fact that this kid I used to work with that had hand skills said that I wasnt a designer/artist whatever cause I couldnt draw by hand.....
- ribit0
but not all 'art' requires hand skills...
sort of related.. In the car design industry people often say they prefer sketches done 'by hand' rather than digitally...but digital sketches done on a Wacom ARE 'by hand'...its only the pen and 'paper' thats different...
/geek terminology rant

art makes the world larger, more complex, more challenging
design makes the world smaller, more simplistic, more reassuring

Being a current graphic design student, it is very important to not only be a good designer, but a good visual artist. The two go hand in hand...on emust apply creativity to their work in order for anything they do to be appealing. I can see where that notion would come from-some designers I know simply know software and have no creative juice.I also know some fine artists that can simply draw or paint well, but their work has no life or meaning. Creativity is what makes any art form unique. Just because I use a mouse and someone else uses a brush doesnt make them better. I a sense I am, because I combine foundational art with new technology.Long live designers!

Design is a discipline, art is general.
