I was curious about something and since I knew there are lots of Europeans that posted here, I figured it would be a good place to ask...
Is it true that in Europe, being on welfare (dole) isn't necessarily looked down upon. In America, if you recieve Public Assistance, you are considered a lazy cheat. But I've heard it's quite common in Europe to be on the dole.
Just curious. And no, I don't plan on going down to the welfare office and applying.

Not really. If I needed it, I'd take it, there's no pride on my part over the dole...
What you should know is it's not worth having most of the time...

I wouldn't say there is a mass stigma attatched to being on the 'rock 'n' roll' in the UK

i never accepted it. always had jobs here and there when i was out o' school.
the hypocrit is, that if i accepted it and let taxpayers take care of me it would have been easier for me to get special funds for starting my company!
How hypocrit is that?????

Kuz, I was just curious about Europe's and America's view of welfare. Like I already stated, I figured this would be a decent place to go for a response on account of the vast number of European's that post on this forum.

I never implied that it's "hip" in Europe to be on the dole. Just less taboo.

i would get paid more if i were on the dole. gotta love the nanny state!
- Kuz0
dude, there's no right or wrong answers, you looking for general concensus?
do a straw poll
Do i personally think anyone receiving the dole is a cheap skate?
no
do some people in the UK think they are?
yes

Personally I like taking money back from the Government.

?
I guess you can fill in that blank...

Well for starters the US is much more of a meritocracy then Europe is.
- paraselene0
i'm surprised you guys are even answering the question at all.
aren't you the ones who would defend to the death the fact that the uk is not part of europe?
*wink

my mate is on the dole, its a sad life.

Kuz, you are such a twat. I'm not asking people whether or not they approve of it. I'm asking if it's less taboo in Europe than in America. And from the answers I am getting, I'd say it is.
Thank you.

I live in eastern, "new" part of Europe, but from my observation, it's less embarassing to be on welfare in western Europe than in the US. Over 5 million unemployed in Germany, and growing. Those people are used to this lifestyle. They had certain welfare cuts recently, but not too dramatic.

as I'm self employed I wish I could claim for the weeks I'm not working...
