I think Frutiger and Univers & Avante Garde are the best font families for wide application.

By solid I mean traditional, non-dated font types. Appreciate it!

oh, ok. But "traditional, non-dated" isn't very descriptive either. Because generally if it's traditional, it's also dated. :)
How traditional? Early 20th century? Earlier?

Depends what you're doing. Setting text for a book, creating a logotype etc. but I know what you're saying. In no particular order:
Gill Sans
Caslon
Bodoni
Garamond
Baskerville,
Univers
Frutiger
Stone Sans
Stone Serif
Geometr

to further simplify my question, lol, something thats GENERALLY good for all around design. I put generally very lightly but a strong, stable, font.
