Tried google... looking for more info...
Anyone know a good resource for info on shields and crests? I'm looking for historical and factual info on the components of crests and other symbols of heraldry. Visual references would be cool too.

I had a cheapo book on that stuff but no idea where it is. There's also some russian site i've seen posted here on NT with family crest info.

Thanks for umm... your help... I guess?
I'm revising a 200 year old crest for a University. Not trying to tear something from it's context to make my site look fresh.
Fucking wingnuts.

whatever dudes, get over yourselves. at least he actually wants to learn what the symbols mean ...
ctrlRmB, check out the book 'Marks of Excellence' at youworkforthem.com
it has historical data for the origin of symbols used on crests, as well as the technical terminology for the various standard elements...
...a pretty enlightening read, actually. i'm glad no one ever told me not to read it.

That's exactly the type of thing I was looking for. Thanks enjine!

Do a keyword search for heraldry at the university's library. You'll get access to some localized research and ain't nothing wrong with a bit o' book learning.
