how come when i save a PDF in illustrator the size is huge?
it doesnt seem to have options to save as screen or whatever..

the save to pdf option creates an editable pdf. if you want to send pdfs to clients or print just print to pdf through the desktop printer or distiller as usual. just the way it is.

or if you want, uncheck the option to keep the document editable. this usually helps for size. just make sure to save a backup .ai file though if you need to change things in the future.

Perhaps I'm missing the obvious, too, but I have the same issue. 1mb resume and coverletter? Ouch.
I ended up using a great little app called PDF Shrink that chopped a good 90% off the filesize while maintaining quality. I might be wrong but I understood this was what Distiller is for, but it has never done anything for me but generate an error. Junk.

Under edit>pdf presets/make new preset for screen > than save your document as adobe .pdf on the top of pdf options the pulldown menu will have your new preset at the bottom.
