I'm going to replace my G3 desktop with a new Apple. I could go for a tempory solution like mac mini and wait for an upgrade. Or go straight for one of the G5 models. I'm spending about €1500,-, any suggestions?
Cheers

Why ask people you've never met? Do your research and buy what suits you best...

Maybe an objective point of view could be refreshing, don't you agree? And as far of my research, how can you judge a person of his research while you don't know him?!

i was just doing the same thing and bought the imac g5 for 1500 which included more ram and 1 gig on my harddrive. the mac mini you need to buy a screen keyboard mouse etc and then its no longer a temporary solution. may as well invest now in the g5, i'm in love with mine.

if you have that much money... invest in the iMac ...
Even though the screen is built in.. the resale value will be much higher later on...

Take a look at how much it costs to add 1GB RAM to the Mac Mini, something you will certainly need sooner or later. Sure, you can wait for the price of 1GB RAM sticks to drop... which will likely happen later rather than sooner!

Seems almost moot at this point, but I vote for the G5 as well. It's in your budget and you don't have to opt in to all the upgrades to get the power and cinema display.

If it were me (which it will be in a few months).
I'd go with the iMac G5.

i bought a single 1.8 ghz g5 and a 20 inch cinema display about a year and 4 months ago...a month later the 20 inch imac g5s came out...i was seriously pissed...looking at my finances now i most definitely should've returned my purchase and got the imac...i would be in much less debt now

but... 1500 wont buy you a very good powerbook G5

the mini is nice for office jobs, internet and »daily business« ... but if you want a good machine for video and all the graphic stuff choose the G5.

man!! you can get a good PC for that price.

I was also in your situation recently and I went with the iMac G5. No complaints whatsoever - much better processing power and it's super stable even when running multiple apps (photoshop, after effects, live, etc...)
Why not a PC? here's why. ;-)
