how do photoshop's color settings work? i am using someone else's computer at work and the colors are way off. whats going on?

Time to visit the help files in PS. There are way too many vagaries for anyone to answer that question.
You could go into color settings and change it all to default (with permission from the person that usually sits at that computer, of course)
- Mimio0
Or if they have a color management program that you don't have, you need to get their gamma/color space settings etc.

vagaries-good word
- xau0
Oh great.
I improperly misused 'vagaries'. Totally different definition than what I thought.
(puts down dictionary)

'improperly misused'
I'm retarded.
It's Friday.
- Mimio0
You're allowed.
- Rand0
I thought you used it right

tried the default setting - not much luck.
if i take a screenshot of this newstoday page and paste it in photoshop, the background color appears to be a different shade. this is fucked up :(

First reason might be that one or both monitors are uncalibrated.
Second reason might be that the file was produced under a different working space than that of which it is currently opening in.

it's probably your monitor have you checked your settings?

(Feb 4 05, 15:48)If you work with images from the web, they are usually in sRGB color space. You where probably in Adobe RGB 1998. Just pick sRGB in your color preference and try again.
- lifeinsodium0
the color setting is sRGB.
if it was the monitor then why would the web browser and photoshop show different colors? shouldn't both be equally off?
if i save a jpg of a file i made in photoshop and view it on a web browser, the colors are different.
- meok0
did you click"embed icc profile" when you saved for web?
- RevoltOne0
I think I can help you...I had this problem a little while ago...if I remember right it looks fucked up in PS but if you "save for web" the color is correct in the web preview...right?
- lifeinsodium0
thats exactly whats going on revolt.
meok, i tried saving with the profile and without the profile but they both look the same. i saved the image in tiff format (with and without icc profile) and opened it in MS Document Imaging.
the saved tiff in the MS software looks exactly how it does on my regular computer but yet it looks different in the photoshop on this other computer.

Ok, go to properties> settings> advanced>color managment.
then "add" Adobe RGB 1998
I'm pretty sure that fixed the problem for me.
Hope it helps ya.
