Intern Faux Pas

O.K. I run a small shop in Toronto, and in the past have had interns come and work with us. There is a College just outsie of the city that gets there students to do an internship starting Feb 18th. I've been getting a lot of requests for interviews, etc from there students.
So out of the many, I decide to invite three to come down to the studio for an interview. One of these we will call "the guy". There is also another student that we will call "the gal" that had horrible work samples with spelling mistakes and all the rest, that I had decided would not be invite for an interview.
So here's where it get's funky. "the dude" decideds to show up this morning, but bring his friend "the gal" along with him because "she's interested in the intern position as well". I'm a little stunned at this but politly as possible explain that I'm rather busy at the moment, and also not in the habit of conducting group interviews. However if he would like to call back to set a time I would be happy to review his book. He nods, they both leave and all is good in the universe again.
A half hour later my friend from the office next door pokes his head in the door and asks why there is a torn up resume (from the gal) scattered all over our buildings lobby.
Is it just me, or is this insane behavior? When did it become OK to invite your friend along to an interview? When did students decide to burn there bridges before they have even crossed over?
Maybe it's just me... but I really don't think so.
Cheers all, I'm getting a beer.

Said college would start with a D and end in ham.

Going for your first interviews after college is a big thing. She probably feels torn that you didn't want to see her. Poor girl has just had her first taste of the real world. Hopefully she will learn to sharpen her portfolio and skills or there will be more rejection and more torn resumes.

Again I ask though, when did it become OK to bring your friend to your interview with you?
- MrRemote0
Believe you me TaraGee, that was discussed.

that reminds me of the time I stumbled, hungover and unshaven into spring "portfolio day" and proceeded to take all my professional frustration and bitterness out on earnest unsuspecting innocents just looking for a kind word and a soft landing into the cold cruel world

THAT WAS YOU?!!!!!

i hear ya remote... i think its just the attitude these days... i have a friend wo works in a 5 star hotel and has people come to job interviews in in ratty jeans and skate shoes... and then they wonder why they don't hear back?

forget about the gal...sounds like she was desperate and would have done anything to get an interview.
my concern is "the dude"...i mean, if i were getting an interview, i would never risk it by bringing a friend - not only is it inappropriate, but it only makes getting the job more competitive.
what was he thinking...

I think the guy was trying to get on the good books of the girl ;)
One place I worked at there was an intern who used to just walk into the CEOs office without knocking and sit in one of his chairs and ask "So, what you up to man".
- grafholic0
yeah probably...except he failed miserably by putting priority on getting laid rather than be on the road to professional success.
not that getting laid is not important.

They sound kind of sketch to me.
Don't dismiss the whole internship idea though, because of these two. I think it's important, I guess you just have to be careful.
I remember back in school big name companies that used to take on interns stoped because of a few bad apples. It pissed me off when open house time came around and the only people that showed up were the bottom of the barrel.
- taragee0
lol guys always go the extra mile to get laid by teh crazy chick - why IS that?
- MrRemote0
Hey Canuck, how are things?
When are we having another NT TO Drinks?

Dude he wanted the job really bad...
The gal was his offering...
That's just how things are done in the professional world.
;-)
P.S. Just to clarify - no it's not right to bring a mate to a job interview, especially unannounced....
