i don't follow stewart.
kitzbühel ain't kitsch in my book. You neve find so many pistes as you will find there. Amazing place to ski.
But i have to say, it's very very expensive.
It's very much like Gstaad.
but there are smaller villages very nearby (and free bus with pass) that are actually fairly cheap, such as Jochberg, Aurach and Kirchberg (although Kirchberg is officially not part of Kitz. so you might need to pay for the bus to get to Kitz from there..)
here's a map:

I love how the drivers of those yellow buses in Kitzbüheler Alp don't give a damn where you went on and where you're going. I honestly don't understand how they make profit because its always free if you have ski gear on.

yup.
officially you need to have a pass, but if you carry something ski/snowboard-related you can go for free anyway.
btw. the ski-pass itself ain't that expensive, the hotels are though..
but i only speak from memory, also about the gstaad thing.. that was 10 years ago since i last skied there. :)

i went skiing and paragliding in austria, rode up the same freaking lift the same freaking day, the europeans let you do whatever you want there, if you die it's your own fault and there's no one to sue and no liability on the lift owner's shoulders. cool.
