What are you trying to learn how to do specifically?

Well, the book I did with Mike is probably a bit much then. Honestly, I'd recommend just going through the tutorial on the PHP web site. That's how I first learned.

I found this book really helpful in my beginings to PHP

specially since it takes you step by step into creating full applications. THat is if you are interested in mySQL at the same time.

I have read that PHP5 is not mature enough yet, and there are still some things to fix in it. So I guess if you study PHP4 you will be ok. But I could be wrong.

i suggest subscribing to oreilly's safari service.
you can read the majority of their books online that way. 9.95 a month beats 50+ bucks everytime you need to learn something.

I really recommend Orielly's "Programming PHP" and "PHP Cookbook"... the cookbook is exactly that, snippets of code organized by functionality, and well commented and explained..."Programming PHP" starts from the ground up and really doesnt assume any prior coding knowledge...
Friends of ED http://www.friendsofed.com offer "PHP for Flash" and "Advanced PHP for Flash", which are great if you ever want to integrate flash with php/mySQL services...
