What's the best way to take freehand vector files into after effects?

export a .eps and import that puppy into your ae project.

do you have to make sure its a complete object? ie. joined or a union ?

AE brings eps files in with option for layer or importing merged.. you'll have the choice once you import..
make sure you continuously rasterize (the little * sun looking icon in your timeline)

this is not a commissioned project in the slightest.
I have discussed this before on here. I am learning after effetcs and how to create a 3d environment. Yes, I did blatently copy that loafheads animation as I thought it was stunning and wanted to work out the process for myself.
The character is one i've been working on for a while, so that is a coincidence:
As for the VH1 part, i just added a logo in to make it complete.
It was all for my training, and I would never think of ripping work for a real live project.
