Right on, I've done a stretch of the AT a couple of times.
Rain for 4 and 1/2 days straight. Fun.
I didn't mind. My stuff stayed dry... the second time.

the mention of backcountry makes me loathe this Vancouver winter... Go all the time for weekend trips an hour or two from here in the summer... Can't wait.

After my divorce I spent a week solo backcountry in the Smoky Mountains.. Unreal...be nice to your feet...take the bears seriously...learn to hang food..use bear boxes..they can even smell the sugar in your toothpaste...

I did a bunch while living in Mammoth. Mostly the Muir trail between Mammoth and Yosemite. Pretty much be prepared for anything and try to train with pretty heavy pack.
