so i've been designing in large format for quite sometime, now my client is buying his own printer and of course i'll be running it.
question is, if anyone has experience with this ie, RIP software, printing tips, profile tips, and so on. will probably be getting a new 20" iMac to run the printer. it's a Sieko 64s.
i got the file setup down, but have always just shipped it off to the printer, now we're becoming a one stop shop.
i just wanted to design, never have to deal with the printing aspect but.......why not, knowledge can't hurt.
thanks in advance.

I think that the rip or fiery will be the key. This is the portion that will make or break large format printing.
The rip is the part that holds the memory and it is very expensive, I think...top of my head... around 10 grand or so.
I work at a printer, I have to check the spec to make sure.
hope this helps.

oh damn, not sure how much is in the budget. the printer alone is like 30k. man, this stuff is mad expensive.
any recommendations for RIP software? too many to choose from.

we have a HP5500 here at work....
we use Photoshop, we rip with our computer (no external rip) ... for the color we adjust in Photoshop.if you have more precise questions, go on

well i think i have to have some sort of RIP software to print these at full scale. they are designed at 1/20th scale at 1200dpi then i'm guessing with in the software, it takes it to full scale to be printed. only thing i can think of is printing from photoshop or whatever at 2000%.

it's far cheaper just to build your own rip box from an old x86 - doesn't need that much brawn, just stuff it with memory and give it a nice drive, hen run a CUPS server on it...

wow, it sounds like you guys actually know what yr talking about. i'm going to google some of this stuff and learn something new today :)

i have no clue what any of that stuff is.....

I don't understand why today's printers can't just take any normal .eps or .ai file and use it even for large scale productions.

no clue, wish that puzzle could be solved as well.
most of my stuff will be coming from photoshop, i hope it will be easy to figure all this out, but not looking that way so far.
all the different color profiles are confusing the hell out of me.
