this is fascinating:

That makes me sick.

Well my first instinct is that they're pretty tasteless people, but who knows, maybe they're relief workers taking an hour off, or something. Point is, the picture may not tell the whole story.
- k0na_an0k0
they're asking for people to come back.
- Scottizzle0
Highly doubt aid workers would wear speed-o's.
Those are just selfish people who dont want to let the deaths of thousands of innocent people ruin their vacation.
I hope those pictures make it on the cover of a newspaper with the title being about how they need more people to help.
God.

they are spending money in these countries and you people are giving them shit? I don't get it. Would you like for the only industries in these countries to be sweatshops?
- illop0
foreign aid and sipping a heineken in your speedo in front of a death squad are two slightly different things.

I think it's great. All those countries want is for people to come back and spend money. I think if you ask the Thai bar that sold those beers, he'd be very greatful.
I think going on holiday there and acting normal is truely the bect thing people could do.
People dont want handouts.

How quick was Wall St up and running after 9/11?
It was 3 weeks ago.

typical

You lame ass, there is a big difference between helping the country, and sitting back relaxing drinking a beer when they are in DIRE need of help! That guy is there, he could go and help, but he is sitting in a fucking speed-o drinking a brew. COME THE FUCK ON. Look at the look on the aid workers faces...They are disguisted as well.
Think about it.

Did you see who's hosting these pics? They could all be fakes. I remember the face of the Devil in the smoke from Tower 2. I think it's just like that creepy baby roasting series that made the rounds.

Thailand needs tourism, its all they have, especially the affected parts.
- driftlab0
my first reaction is to hope and pray that those people are photoshopped in there.
but, I don't know... maybe there's something to the notion that those slobs are contributing to the rebuilding of their tourism industry

scotizzle you need to CTFO mate.
As it happens, thailand is desperate for people to come back and start holidaying agin. It is their MAIN source of income. The sooner people come back, the sooner local people start making money again, and the faster recovery gets...
Yeah it sucks - those photos are rotten...but damned if you do, and the locals are damned if you don't....ya dig?

just an honest question, not trying to make a point as i'm not quite sure how i feel about this yet: Would the photos be less offensive if the volunteers were not shown toiling away behind the vacationers? If, for example, some local media were showing that people feel comfortable coming back so soon to vacation in hopes to encourage other vacationers to visit, would these pictures still be as offensive? Or would you think, "that's cool that the businesses can continue on so soon"?

would you rather have all the resorts shut down and take away a vital part of their economy so they have to struggle more?
they started their schools back up to gain a sense of normality, so people dont go insane with what's going on.
to me, it is as if they are trying to get back to how they once operated. nevermind that a few aid workers are disgusted, theyre both (aid workers and tourists) are trying to make that place like it used to be.
it's all a matter of perspective. im sure it can be viewed both ways, as it already has.
- mayo0
my only worry is that some of the vacationers will try to take advantage of things somehow. Haggle down the prices of things far below their worth because they know some of the people need anything they can get, etc. You just have to hope and pray that the people are well-intentioned.
- kodap0
to me it's just a weird scenario..
points taken, I don´t know if I agree with the tourism effect or disagree with the contrast of death and effort with the relaxation...:\
- kodap0
.. or maybe they're just voyeurs.- that is a sicko thing.
A month or 2 months waiting for a vacation in there might be the wiser choice.

Life goes on...
Wallowing isn't constructive for anyone. Funny as it may seem drinking a beer on the beach is far more constructive.
Aid workers are great (I've volenteered as one) but they can be a bit dour. Like I said I'd be interested to know how quick the business district of NY reopened after 9/11.
