Should I get?
I'm not willing to spend more than $500. Less than $400 would be ideal.
I'm looking for something with:
- great aperture capabilities
- act compact as possibleThis is what I like, just coz its so damned pretty: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obido…
Please tell me what to buy. Remember, this is sort of a casual hobby thing.

The sd20 is a great camera to bring on the road. Got one for the folks back home.
Also check out Canons powershot a95. Fits in the pocket too, is very easy to use and doesn't cost that much. Clean images, nice resolution.
If you are going the dslr way perhaps look into a used 10d. Excellent camera, and you can probably get one for under 500$

Thank you all for your suggestions.
Now that we're in NT primetime, anyone else have any thoughts?
If I want to adjust aperture on the fly for a candid shot, is a dslr lens my only hope? Do we have any miniature guys that do that?

SD300

I got a Kodak DX400 for my wife ($270 US) and it is a great camera. Full manual settings, optical glass lens, burst mode, and it takes add on lenses (need a $20 adaptor)

Downside only 4MP, other than that *for the money* its probably the best out there right now.

Screw everything – go for top of the range. It’ll be bottom of the range in a year or so anyway.

I'm super happy with my Nikon CoolPix 4200. Great lens.
It was about $400 when I bought it last year. Now you can get the 5200 for the same price.
