Why do 'they' report the earnings for each movie that's in the theatre each week?

I'm just sitting here thinking about maybe catching a film... and right on the front of this site is the box office posting for last week's earnings.
Seriously - if they didn't report it.. would we really give a shit? The media is really brilliant in the ways they instill this 'need to know' bullshit in us.
I need sleep.
