All I know is that Belle & Sebastian have a song called "The lonliness of a middle-distance runner" or something like that.

yeah it was vaguely based off of that movie i believe.
yo la tengo also has a movie named after the leading actor, tom courtenay.

one of my favourite films of all times. Was very surprised to see something so artistic made in Britain during the 50s... like the TV adverts sequence that's become such a cliche these days.

(that bit when before he goes to jail of all the adverts on TV, taking a swipe at consumerist society)
You should also check out Lindsay Anderson's If, similar tale of disaffected youth in post-war britain, and also very artistic. But I prefer this film cos it's more working class.
Fucking hell, it's been years since i sawed it, one of the greatest films of all time. Y'all should watch it. Fo sho
