what programs would one use to create animation - not 3D stuff, but 2D, like the simpsons...

well you can do that in 3d software using cell shade[ing]. but other then that you can use AE fisrt make each frame in photoshop... or editing software....

hmmm....hadn't thought about flash, probably a good call. anybody know what is used for 'real' shows, like the simpsons, family guy, etc....any sort of funded animated programming....

i worked in an animation studio for a few years. it was mostly traditional animation, ie. animation was drawn on paper and scanned. the software we used after the scanning was Toonz, http://www.toonz.com , by Digital Video, who also makes Tab.
i doubt that this is what they are using for Simpsons, but they are still using the same hand drawn techniques. and Toonz isn't bad to work with once you get to know the basics of animation and compositing. it's much better after the last few version upgrades.
