How do you import a psd into AE. 5.5 (OSX) so that the layers maintain the same position in AE as they did in Photoshop?
Tried everything & it just clumps them together.

you should have the option of importing merged layers or each one individually which you will see if you scroll up in the jump menu. are the layers named?

if you double click on the psd comp it'll open it up. the layers will be in their correct positions. then just copy and paste them into the comp you're working.

What you want to do is :
File>Import>File
find your PS file and then selecti it and see at the bottom where it says import as> Footage
switch it to
Composition -cropped layers.
That will make a comp with all your layers in it in the right place. then just copy the layers into your other comp if you want to.

do you have the option to import 'multiple files' in the file>import>...
looks like you have select import>file

Interesting . . . I did choose "import multiple files" and this made a difference.
Its wierd I havent seen that solution anywhere else. Or perhaps i was just reading over things too fast or something
thanks!
