loading issues aside, and whether or not it's a stupid idea aside, if I made a giant flash file with, say, 350 images of around 50k each, each of them available on rollover, would that even work, or would there be performance issues?

not advisable at all.
you should always think of an 'on demand only' type of folio loading.
list your images in a separate xml file, load it and let the use choose. wich one to see.

like 350 thumbnails w/ rollovers? or just a slideshow?

unfit... you have any good xml tutorials (for flash of course)...
... I've been dying to attempt it.

like unfittoprint said,
xml, load them individually. cleaner operation, easier to edit.

I was hoping they could all be seen instantly on rollover--no clicking, just effortless riffling through them like flipping through a book
- johndiggity0
css w bg images instead maybe?

it seems easier to change and reorder images driectly in the flash file-- no figuring out what file has what name, etc

350 X 50k = no dice

no thumbnails-- thumbnails are the images themselves
- abizzyman0
what if it was in sections?
20 load... then you click a next button for the next 20.. that type of thing.

buttons appear as images load

any links to similar sites?

to me the appeal is instant access to all images -- no arbitary choices to make

no, John, I don't think I've ever een anyone insane enough to try it- probably with good reason

but if there's no real reason not to do it in terms of performance, why not? Wouldn't be that different from having 350 frames of video, would it?
- nice-land0
photography or design pieces? and do you really want to overwelm the viewer with 350 choices?
quality over quantity, IMHO.

i know build has a big ass flash file up on his site. you could call it brittany spears xxx and people might sit through the load time ;)

hmmm...
crazy time consuming idea coming up:
how 'bout you duplicate a TON of empty movie clips... and create one cute little preloader that centers itself over the empty clip and just starts loading from a folder like crazy.
sooo... the user is constantly seeing images load - but has more than enough to occupy themselves with while new images are loading.

I don't really want a preloader-- just have the buttons appear one by one as the images become available for rollover. You only see an image when rolling over

quality issues aside, I don't think it would be overwhelming to the viewer because it's more or less effortless to view as much or as little as you want- you don't even have to click
