if i move all my files from my hd to an external harddrive to free up space will my computer run faster? or only ram?

depends on what files you moved there.
if the connection is slower you should never put system resources on the external, i mean that really slows things down.
and more RAM never hurts.

well I maxed out on my ram but PS was giving me the old "scratch disk" full message so I thought it was time to move some files over and I also noticed my computer not running its fastest. I wont move the applications themselves but all my PSD's, EPS', AI's, PDF's, Zips and what else will help free up space?

and would freeing up this type of space help its performance?

yes, i ditched a lot of things related to classic as i never use it anymore.
you should also check the os-x apps thread there's apps there that help speed up the system by trashing unnecessary resources..

janne I got so lost in that osx thread that i forgot what i was looking for until i came back here. i downloaded like 500 new apps and am filling up all the space i just cleared! lol! thank you! that was the best thread eva!
