I think it could be bottled along w/ the Antonio Banderes scent and the Celine Dion odor

God man, when I lived there I used to have to shower directly after. Always the first thing I did. That Queens route was pretty bad.

there's something about that unidentified black soot stuff that you find under your fingernails every day and on your windowsill when you leave the window open...

Hmm, I detected notes of flaming rat with undertones of stale hobo urine and hipster vomit. But then, I'm on the L train.

with a high, urine-y nose

you gotta find it interesting that each subway station smells different.
for instance Lex and 59th. It's got this weird musty smell to it not found anywhere else. Or the L at 14th and 1st which always smells like a backed up toilet gone sour.
Thank god it's winter... it smells so much worse when the shit is hot.

By far, at least in the City, the stops in the Upper East Side are the nicest. Of course.

there must be a way to take the existing subway map and color code it for smell.

On a somewhat related note, about a week ago there was a nice sized rat on the uptown 4/5 side at 14th street (on the platform, not on the tracks) and it wasn't bothering anyone when it was hanging out by the garbage room, but it soon ran out onto the main area of the platform and everyone scattered. It was a fun sight.
And 149th and Grand Concourse in the Bronx is definitely one of the worst smelling stations...and dirtiest. I think the garbage piled on the tracks is at eye-level.

Gotta admit though, the subways stink a lot less this time of year than in the humid summers.
