Do any of you advertise your services locally in the yellow pages, newspaper ads, etc? Also if your in a not so hip market do you tone down your designs at all?

Advertising in the yellow pages is really expensive.

i've never spent a dime advertising. the only money i've spent is on business cards and hosting.
word of mouth is your best friend. that and some good search keywords so people can find you online.

flyers everywhere. music stores, coffee shops, restaurants, inside the free weekly boxes. posters as well. just point it to your web site.

i work for an IT company that has web development as one of it's offerings. that said, our ads are very corporate/generic.
last week i got a call from a guy that found us via the yellow pages. turns out to be a really good opportunity.
that doesn't happen often, though.
