Sorry this is a lame question but I don't use a PC regularly. I am trying to get a laptop to use my current internet connection through my cable modem ethernet cable. Everything I've tried doesn't work and I get page cannot be displayed.

software installation from your provider?

You will need software on the computer from the ISP.
The only way you can just plug a computer up and get on the web without software is by having a router, that is configured with the info for the ISP.
I have that at home, and anyone can plug into the network and be on the web.

Contact your provider dude - Mine won't work unless they have my MAC address logged on their server (and yes, a PC does have a MAC address!)

What you can do is use a "bridged" connection between the LAN and the firewire.
so you connect the laptop with firewire to the other computer that is connected with the LAN to the WEB.

PS it works for MAC -> PC too.

Sounds like you really need to get a router... get a WiFi/router combo and make it all much simpler to use...
