I am currently investigating opportunites to help. I have a communications degree with years of expierence with audio and visual gear. Although medical assistance is obviously most in demand, communication stations and workers are also in need. I have yet to find a proper organization but if something is needed I am willing to go.

sure why not, the Indian Ocean is massive, you can still go to very nice African shorelines, Mocambique, South Africa, Zanzibar. Also Maldives, Madagascar, etc.
I stayed here: http://www.wildlifeafrica.co.za/…

my inlaws are going in 15 days..
their relatives (brothers, sisters, parents etc) many of them still live back in india....my mother inlaw's mom, and most of her brothers and sisters live on the coast..
all survived, thankfully, but one or two lost atleast part of their homes...my wife and daughter and i are supposed to go in the summer..but we'll see how things go...

i am thinking of going in a month or so, to help distribute food and rebuild shelters, that sort of thing.
i would be of no use now.

and i'll point and laugh at you while kona gives you a whoopin.

going there to help is one thing. going there to take photos of people helping, the dead bodies, destroyed buildings and destruction... is entirely another. and THAT would deserve an ass whooping.

Today in 'De Morgen', a Belgian newspaper, I've read the following: people willing to travel to the area right now are advised to go. Don't hesitate, go. The locals need the tourist money more than ever.

not sure what your plans are but please don't go over there to take pictures of other peoples pain - that really sickens me - why else - money?? - I hope not!!!!
Also going there for a holiday thats even worse! I know someone who is going over there for their holidays and that totally shocked me! I mean if you are considering on going over there please do it for the right reasons not the wrong ones.

tourism is one of the best ways to help, dont let their economy come to a screeching halt.

I agree that tourism is the main industry to get these countries back on their feet but I can't help but feel that going there so soon is a bit unreal! I mean I couldn't go over there to enjoy myself on holiday with all the suffering going on - you know what I mean? I think its just too soon right now.
