There were a few people here that didn't know this and thought they couldn't use TiVo with HDTV but....
Just wanted to say that TiVo does support HDTV. "DirecTV offers an HD TiVo DVR. You can purchase it at retail stores or direct from DirecTV."

i just got my cable tivo hdtv thingy yesterday...
... but I can only watch so many episodes of Discovery's channel's 'Big'.... and why the hell are the HD stations basically running 4 shows for 5 days straight and then changing the programming? It's a gorgeous picture... but c'mon - I've seen the giant guitar / peter frampton episode of Big 8 times now.

how much did you pay for HDTiVo?
cause i will be getting that.
- abizzyman0
it's an additional $10/month for cable subscribers in my area.

thats sounds good mand, can't wait!

do you do any TiVo hacks? like display phone number thats calling on TV?

I made my own "TIVO" or PVR and highly recommend it! It's easy to do, and there's no subscription fees...also, i can burn the shows i record to dvd format! i'm lovin it!

yeah or i can skip being a geek and just use TiVo.

how much did it cost ya? is it essentially a barebones PC with lots of storage?
- abizzyman0
pah!
never EVER skip the chance to be a geek.
... and, uh... nope.. never hacked the tivo as I've had it less than 24 hours. :P

I have meself a replay tv w/ commercial advance and filesharing.. was fortunate to get a refurb & lifetime for around 300 bones.. Unfortunately I'm not so sure about HD support.. I'm planning on replacing the hard drive with one of those new 300GB beasts.

making your own is such a hassle and it won't have what tivo has. will it work with hdtv? its to much trouble i like TiVo everyone i know is talking about it and loving it, id just rather save the time and get a TiVo.

that to much compared to what TiVo gets you at its price. TiVo is iPod for TV.

Basically a barebones system....if you already have a decent computer you can use the one you have...
You could build one for about 200 bucks. depends on the software you use.
and i prefer "dork"

I was considering doing that with an extra drive on my current PC once I get an HD set.. for the time being, the replayTV is swell.. any HDTV tuner cards you'd recommend? I'm only familiar with the Hauppage.
- flatulence0
if you build your own you can listen to music, look at pictures, and it can be hdtv compatible if you want it to...just depends on which tuner card you buy.

I'm new to the whole thing...i just built my first one as my christmas present to myself.
here are some good resources:

http://www.pvrblog.com/If you know linux, it's supposedly even better...
Anyhow, I've been using mine for a week and it's awesome. Does everything Tivo does and more.
(And Hauppauge seems to have the best tuner cards out there right now)
