i was wondering, are they any good? better than a regular mouse? or worse? who has one? for what purposes is it better than an ordinairy mouse?

they're horrid - my sister has one, but she has her computer on a shelf rather than a desk -
trackball means you can 'do it' in your lap

they take a while to get used to

I use a trackball at home. It does take some time to get used to and you need a really steady hand if you plan on being precise. If you don't have the time, patience or nerves to use one then go with a wacom.

i have one. but i don't use it anymore. it was cool for a while, but to do some very precise work, it wasn't working well for me.

I have one, it was terrible at first, but after a few days I got the hang of it, after 2 weeks I was whizzing around rather quickly.
I have found that it is good for editing programs and such, but for photoshop, it rather sucks.
I would suggest a wacom personally, because it seems fairly versitile in both effeciency and ergonomics.
