iPod on Mac and Windows?

I guess I didn't read up enough. Got an iPod. Hooked it up to my Mac. Loaded up all of my muzak. Then went home to the PC (blah!) and thought I could transfer all of those songs into my iTunes library there.
It told me that it needed to be reformatted to connect. Which would obviously erase all contents.
Is there anyway to go back and forth btw a Mac and PC with an iPod without having to take that step?
thanks,
bB

well.. the best thing to do...
after you sync your ipod on your mac with all your songs... just put it into MANUAL mode.
then when you hook it up to your PC you can play your songs right off the of the ipod in itunes.
Make sure its in manual mode...
There is no need to have all your music on both computers..

or you could go to version tracker and but ipod works for less then $10 and that will let you copy from your ipod to your pc.

So the answer is really no? I would also like to know if this is possible.

The answer is yes, but third party software is needed. Because apple wanted to appease the RIAA (is that the right ackronym?) they did not build the ability into the iPod that music could be transferred from iPod to computer by default. IOW, by default, the iPod will not allow copying of music from the iPod to the computer. To do this, one must get third party software.
Put the iPod in manual mode, and then head over http://www.ipodlounge.com and download the respective software for both mac and windows. There are free programs, though they are not as aesthetically pleasing, or as intuitive as shareware ones.

you can my friend with no third party software...
1a]. format your iPod on the PC using the iPod software for PC (Mac can read from Mac & PC, where as PC can not read Mac formated discs)
1b]. Remember to have the power-brick near by after last step so you can reset the firmware;
2]. then load the tunes from your Mac and remember to allow HD-mode (and maybe manual load songs to avoid the pop-up asking to auto-sync, though if you just remember to say "no" then that's fine) in preferences.
3]. No step 3
This is how I deal day in day out... 1 thing to remember is a PC formated iPod can not load Mac files that has long names or with anything but letters and dashs etc.
god bless the Mac ;-)
