anyone have any experience with this? It looks to me that the domain name is going to expire in January. I have pretty much the same domain name however this is a shortened version (company vs co). Should I contact the person or wait to see if it expires? I could call him as well I guess, that might be better.
Have any of you bought domains from people?

ok I wrote him...what would be a good price?? I'm thinking 40 - 80 bux? It's not like it's going to be for commercial use, just a portfolio site.

I'm trying to get a domain right now. I learned the hard way not to contact someone because it only elevates the worth in their mind. Once they actually have a bidder on the domain, they'll re-register it and ask for more.
Last year I contact someone, and instead of replying the re-registered a day after I sent the email. This year I have 2 different snap-back services on the domain, and I have a *feeling* he might not get his email reminder because his inbox could be filled with spam.
Furthermore, the domain in question I'm trying to get has been registered for the past 12 years and it hasn't had a single page up in that time period. Fuck squatters.

yeah I hear ya. I intentionally told the guy that I have the longer domain and acted very much like it didn't matter too much if I got his domain or not, I would just prefer to have it since it is a little shorter.
We will see what he says. It really doesn't matter too much to me, I would prefer it but oh well...if dickhead wants to keep it occupied thats fine by me.

There are services offered by Network Solutions and others where they act as an agent for you, to make an offer, where the seller doesnt know who you are... You only pay a fee to the agent if you get the name... might be a better way.
Plus there are bidding services such as Snap Names or Name Winner which hunt for expiring names based on criteria you give them, or a pscific name... it goes to auction if more than one person has requested the name...
