Was wondering if any of you know how this situation would be decided professionally.
Say a player draws a winning hand but didn't know. He shows the card on the table assuming defeat but he actually won. Does he lose or is the hand judged for what it is and he takes the pot?

the only way the person with the better hand would lose is if they folded...

weve had that discussion several times. we play that the cards tell the tale. even if the loser is pissed. he bet against the hand. we think its the perfect definition of "dumb luck"

what, someone thinks they lost, show their cards anyway and ends up winning? How is that a situation?

it happens. majority folds w/no show but i've come across plenty of situations where it did. But I agree, if ever it does come up, it should be given to the best hand.

when i say dumb luck i mean the winner was too dumb to realize it and accepted defeat and all the other players are like hey stupid, you won and heres why. it happens a lot in our group

yup, if u mucked your winning hand well u r a dumbfuck.

i agree, the cards determine the winner. happens all the time in my circle too. seriously happens to the best players sometime.

that happens a lot in our circle as well. the person calls all the way down to the river, we flip our cards and they think they've lost...and oh, oops, they got the flush or some bullshit.
my fiance is famous for that. she gets tired if we play late night games. she'll call and when the other player flips their *winning* hand she just turns her cards over and says oh well...when really she's got the better hand.
usually one of us catches it, but a few have slipped by if no one is paying attention.
it just depends on your choosen set of poker ethics for your circle of players.
we have games near 100 people at times, so things get a little crazy.

Cards that are shown are judged the same regardless of the stupidity of the player.
Feel free to give him/her a good slap upside the head for not knowing they won though.
