wouldn't it be safe to assume if the client can handle creating an image and adding it to an xml doc they can handle figuring out it's size? All major OS's have built-in utilities for getting image information...

I'm doing the same sort of thing with my moblogging site... to draw the shadows etc I have to load in the image first to see its dimensions...

Looks hard to me what you're doing. By the way is it possible to draw a dropshadow with actionscript?
Th next generation of flash has it. But the mx 2004 i dont think so

i just draw an alphaed square behind it..

It's collapsing in Firefox, IE and Safari for me, and when the audioplayer loads it shows some text saying something like '_level0...'.
