the shit is looking pretty washed out on my monitor...but my pantone has a nice vibrant red...wtf?
- iDp0
colors management gives me a fuckign headache. Anyone have some good pointers on matching monitor color to final print?

1. get a good monitor
- iDp0
my monitor isnt bad. Viewsonic is pretty close to industry standard next to Apple monitors and Lacie CRT's.
- ribit0
Have you calibrated it?
This is about where my expertise ends :)

i don't even pay attention to the colors on my monitor. I'm sure there's a way to get it nice and calibrated but i just see/think in numbers now...
though i do remember BonSeff mentioning something about thhis:

do you have a pantone book? If you are designing for print you should just pick from the book. (stating the obvious sorry)
- iDp0
yeah I totally agree with you Rasko. I have all the pantone books but I've found reds to get a little tricky and viewing them as a 1/2 inch by 1 inch color sample isn't like having this huge logo stretched across a rocord sleeve...could end up a little pinkish or orange.
Yeah I calibrated it already, oh well. Maybe I'll see if someone has a spyder I could borrow.

like i said, though...
look at the different inks mixed to make that PMS swatch.
if you see reds mixed with magentas and other pinkish colors - you may want to shy away from those. most PMS colors are made by mixing basic PMS inks.
Think like you're mixing paints.

yeah, the pantone book is the first and best step. However I have found it fookin annoying when you are trying to come up with three or more colors that will look good together. (the swatches bound together don't allow for much cross comparison)
We have the new Spyder Pro here at the office. It has done a pretty good job with our sub-par crt monitors. It comes pretty close to the actual PMS color.
The next step is to figure out a way to have our Epson print a proof with matched spot colors.
(it is a headache)

StylusRIP for the Epson.
it's not the best answer....
it's the only answer.
- iDp0
I just wish this fucking sleeve wasnt being produced in Holland, or I would go press check it.
- rasko40
how do you use StylusRIP when using apps in 0SX? cos its a classic app.. I need to sort this out
- ribit0
How useful is it to bring in stuff you have printed before (with a similar color mix), and sit it right alongside the new work on the monitor... does this help at all, or is it just more guesswork?
- Gorbie0
do you have a 2nd Mac?
i haven't sorted this out yet either... but fortunately i've aquired a collection of G4's from various jobs and set one up running in OS9 - strictly as a print server.
I am trying to figure something out though. and i'll let you know if i do.
- Gorbie0
and rasko...
the only answer i've come up with so far is to make PDF's before i print. reboot in 9 and print from Acrobat to the RIP.
crazy, huh?
- rasko40
yeah cool.
I have a second mac in a box somewhere, but I dont think a Classic is going to be of much help heheh
- rasko40
hmm yeah thats a long winded process, but it works so maybe I will do that thanks
- Gorbie0
on the bright side... it forces you to proof your shit much better.
