ok supposed i drew a crocodile..or aligator if you want to be politically correct, and then i drew scales (well circles really) over the crocodiles body. now suppose i want to cut the circles off the aligators body so that you can see through it where the circles used to be. how do i do this?
i already tried selecting all the cirlces and doing the slice command but i get the dialogue box that says im using more than one object. will one of the pathfinder options work? im using illy 9.

select all the scales and move them to a different layer. turn off and on as you need. is that what you wanted?
- aliendn0
no, i actually want to cut the scales out of the shape of the aligator.
i.e. suppose you wanted to make a donut. u draw a large circle. then you draw a small circle. then you delete the small circle shape out of the larger circle. thats what i want to do but with multiple shapes at the same time.

save it first so you can go back to it when you fuck up. always backup your shit before cutting or slicing and shit..
having that said..
have you tried divide?
it simply cuts everything thru everything.. might be a bit tricky selecting shit afterwards though..
- DutchBoy0
oh you must ungroup EVERYTHING in it before you can use divide or any other pathfinder option..
- johndiggity0
so you overlayed the circles on the aligator and want to remove the offending hanging edges of the circles so that they are all inside the alligator outline? if this is so group all the cirlces and paste as a mask in the body. is that more like it?

thanks dutch! yeah it worked, just gotta select all the shapes and delete them individually, thanks!
- aliendn0
john digs im not familiar with that technique of pasting as a mask. i've grouped the circles but how do i paste them as a mask. (dutch's method worked for me, but i wouldnt mind learning new techniques)
thanks for the suggestions

Do what dutchboy said ...or
select the shapes infront of the crock and then the crock and click
object/compound path/make
:)
- aliendn0
holy phuck, what is that compound path make option about?! that did it in one step!
can u explain what it does in laymen's terms, i feel like i just watched magic
- Beech0
lol
Yeah thats what it does. I liken it to the punch tool in freehand.
- johndiggity0
pathfinder is magical indeed. to make a mask, move the group of scales behind the alligator, select both and go Object > Clipping Mask > Make.

alien - for a quick lessson in compound paths, convert any font to outlines:
a = compound path
b = compound path
c = not a compound pathetc, etc.
- DutchBoy0
duh! i did not understand your question that well..
don't say i warned you to back up before doing what i say, eh?
:D
- aliendn0
timg id love to experiement with it, but can u clarify what u mean by
a = compound path
b = compound path
c = not a compound pathdo u mean to place objects behind the letters i've converted to an outline and see what makes a compound path or not?
thanksNadvance
- DutchBoy0
i think he means the letters a and b like o and q have open areas within them..
c does not..
na meen?
