Well there is a slight problem I don’t know any thing about servers, "OH" I here you say...
Well a client just rang and said he would like to move his URL to a new server. Any one know what I’m supposed to do...
Cheers
p.s. I'm currently pretending to know what I’m doing but the charade could be exposed soon, help if you can.

..that's a big bag of worms fella.
you got all the FTP server details to sort, then repointing the domain name too?

um yeh, do you know of any where online i can read up on this?

you just move their stuff from their old provider (ftp) to the new one, right?
or am i wrong? if that's it, it's not that hard.

plus you have to know where the domain is registered, and redirect the domain to point to the new host's nameservers (unless the nameservers are hosted at the domain registrar or elewhere).
Can be easy or complicated depending on the current setup...

Maybe get the Oreily book 'Webmaster in a Nutshell'?

you can get web directing for that sort of thing through ICDSoft.com.
dont know if everyone does it...

couple things you should quickly ask questions about:
-are you moving the site to a server that they set up?
-if so, where is the domain registered at? (register.com, godaddy, etc..)
-if it's just changing a host, you have to change the domain's DNS with register.com (or whatever), and transfer the files to the new server, setup ftp accounts, etc...

If you need to move the url to a new provider here is what you do.
The person with the access to the domain has to change the details to your details [info] then you log into your new provider and do a domain transfer request they will charge you [$9.00] for the transfer then you will get an email to confirm this transfer that is why you need to change the detail info of the domain provider to your details. You will then click on a link to notify that you do want to request it, then 2 days to a week that domain name will appear in the new domain provider. about hosting, just get hosting then ftp old stuff to new hosting, fisrst you will have to download the files from the current hosting.
