just out of interest does ne1 know if this is what was used for the orange adverts on billboards and bus stops etc. few months ago around the uk? i saw them in manchester.

dunno... but seen better versions... don't reckon it uses the different weight of characters to provide different colours... and the space between words makes it look lumpy

couldn't you create the exact same effect with a type layer masking a photo in photoshop?

yep a multiply, a mozaiced image and a monospaced font
