What do you guys think about special characters in typography? In Sweden for example we've got Å, Ä and Ö. I think it adds value and makes typography a bit more dynamic and interesting. It can however be hard to work with sometimes since it expands the CAP-height. Just saw this
that Browns created for 'National Interpreting Service', excellent logo imo. Also I see that Tröllbäck, http://www.trollback.com use a lower-case 'ä' as their logo. Any other good examples where special characters adds value? (Guess I just wanted to bring back some discusssion about design for a change. :-)

on a serious note though, as a german, i have two umlauts in my name. having lived in the US for 17 years now, i got tired pretty early on of having my name butchered constantly, dropping my first name entirely and going with the phonetic spelling for my last name.
I do love my umlauts, just not what the english tongue does with them.

From what i've seen most american's just ignore umlauts. I've even heard people treat umlauts as accents.

Funny, I didnt know that either, actually its a german word: "umlaute", which you would translate with "sound around" :)

when i did package design back in the day i had to typeset english, german and french. the characters were pretty interesting. it was also interesting to see the same set of product info take up different amount of space in the layout due to the translations.

ha germany actually recently had a spelling reform (which was not popular at all and is still being fought in court) where they got rid of one of our anomalies, the 'sharp s' or ß.
it's really a greek beta and is supposed to be a 'tz' sound but is really pronounced 'sss'.
the 'letter' itself came from the old german fraktur, where they took to connecting the t and the z, which sorta made it look like a beta. when hitler in the 30s officially proclaimed that germans shouldn't write in fraktur anymore, it became adopted into the language without ever becoming an actual letter.
this concludes tonight's episode of pointless typography tales.

Damn good story.
So Hitler is even responsible for the "ß" that made every german kid depressed when you didnt know to pick "das" oder "daß" - I hate him even more now!
