For most designers starting off that are comfortable with dreamweaver - I recommend using dreamweaver to learn the fundamentals.
This is a decent book for beginners...

Set www.php.net as your homepage. It's function search is the best.

php.net's documentation is very bad as a way of learning the language, it's a reference.
there's an oreilly book called something like "building dynamic web applications with PHP & mySQL" or something which is really good.
i also learned a lot from the Webmonkey tutorials, they used to be at http://hotwired.com/webmonkey, dunno if they still are

The PHP homepage is really little more than your help files that come with Flash or Director. Sure there's lots of info but it can be lacking in direction, especially for beginners. That said, keep it bookmarked as the first place you go to figure something out. Quite some time ago I picked up the PHP and PHP/mySQL Visual Quick Start Guide books and found them very easy to get in to.

i am just starting out to. I think that it is satisfactory, and easy to understand.

Thanks guys,
I deffinetly will pick up one of those books. I don't really like programming but i think that PHP is something that I should learn to the point that i can mod the code. I don't think that i'll ever get to a point that I come up with my own code, but who knows.
Thanks for all the links
