Background of this broadcast:
Last week there was a political murder (again) in my country Holland. Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh was murdered for making an highly discussed movie about the abuse of muslim women.Situation after the murder:
All Dutch media (websites, television, radio and papers) are speaking of "terrorism" while actually ONE man was targetted for a personal murder. What is terrorism?
When I looked up the term of terrorism and it's exact meaning it said that "terrorism is an event where a mass is giving some sort of degree in physical pain and has longduring after affects".My point in this topic:
With the recent murder of the filmmaker in Holland (and all of the other personal attacs all over the world where just one person is affect physically, isn't the media just finding an excuse over and over again of using the word "terrorism"?Will this acutaully not make the media themselves terrorists??
They are the ones that are making the crowds go crazy by hyping all wordwide events and calling single murders terrorists? Are the media responsible for making masses of people so damn mad that they start burning mosks in my home country? After all: they spreaded the information in a form that implies that a war is going on?
Discuss please how the media should have some kind of 'information design policy of bringing out real and correct information....

"Background of this broadcast:

also these sort of threads are not much tolerated here anymore.
- WoutWijtenburg0
Why not tolerated? Im trying to let people see that media is taking a complete wrong turn? This website is about media. So if this cannot be tolerated... I guess the website is not about 'that' media?
- DutchBoy0
Wout, it's ok.
but i see you haven't been here for a while.
politics related threads are removed most of the time.
jsut a warning, mate!
:)

'names' are removed as well...and isn't that what this is all about? Terrorism is merely a definition without much definition...a polarization of actions in which the end result of such actions are the transformation of a society, in a word, alchemy. Those societies who choose to define the term "terrorism" or "marriage" in this way or that way, weaponize language.

too much reading....
ignored...
bye bye.....

Ya, words are tricky, eh save?
I agree with you in that "terror" and it's derivatives are the hot button word of our generation, as it seems anyway. The media and the government have agendas and that is to sell an idea to the public, and FUD works very well. George Bush is still president.

you;'re better off takinga thread like this to yayhooray or something..people who are interested in debating this stuff will go to those there....I think it just opens doors that are just bad in here...
...besides, I think it sucks when I only see certain NT members posting in threads on politics or religion and hardly ever post on design related topics....
I say keep the political preaching out of the design threads...

terrorism is about attacking people for having a certain set of beliefs.Your example qualifies I think.
Yeah the media is wack, but its not all sensationalism. This videogame culture is so numb to information that nothing has effect anymore. Well yo, sensational shit is going on in the world, so you gotta start an internal dialogue and learn to let some shit through your bullshit filter.

NT is becoming lame . . .

well, the discussion of the definition of terrorism isn't as exciting as discussing, say, San Andreas or other marketing campaigns, yet they are all political discussions. People often forget the role of political ideology as a way to understand the advertising tsunami that crushes over them. They forget that, in Image Arabia, words are a meaningless barrier to demographic pre-selection and the subscription service of the unconscious mind. A campaign is a campaign, a War on Drugs, a Drug or a video game or meant to dissuade 'boring' sentences prone to pressing hot buttons on the control panel....
- prodigalslacker0
terrorism is a spin term these days.
both kerry and bush campaigns tried to "fight a war on terror" when they'd lose anyway. there will always be terrorists, it's not a big deal. people die, get over it. it sucks, but you will never please everyone.

(nov 20 04, 13:37)There are regulatory bodies such as OFCOM but i know what you mean. i'm wary of blanket blame though - blaming the "media" for the world's problems can be as simplistic as blaming the "terrorists".
threads like this get put down all the time and i'm confused as to why that is. designers are professional communicators after all, and quite a few people here are interested in mass media and its effects.

this is terrorism
