Are there any other poor students out there living in a shithole (population say < 60 000)?
It blows. Hard. The level of education here when compared to a larger city is pretty bad, on top of that the choices of education are extremely limited. Here we’ve basically got two design course options! A four year Multimedia UNI course and a two year Multimedia Diploma at TAFE. I managed to get into the TAFE course this year (15 spots were available). The level of education in both, especially the TAFE course is rather sub-par when compared to the same courses in a larger city.
Picking up design work on the side is nigh impossible as there are two businesses here that have an absurd market monopoly and freelancers are pretty much non-existent here.
Fuck this sucks. I’m stuck here in a place without work, receiving a shite education because I’ve got no money to get the hell out of here. Hopefully at the end of 2006 I’ll have my Multimedia Diploma and enough cash to move to Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane and get myself into a course where I’ll get a decent education and be able to freelance while studying and then really bust into the world of design.
Please, tell me I’m not alone... are any of you in similar situations (or were any of you in the same spot as me in the past and have you managed to do alright for yourselves)?

People are very good at adapting to their environment.

dont expect freelance work if your learning on the job - it WILL be hard to come by - if you do find some its a bonus.
move to where you want to study *visit the uni's/courses first) take up a part time/night/weekend job as well as your normal studies once youre there, get yourself in thousands of pounds worth of debt, apply for grants and get an education in (and wherever you want) thats like 90% of students have to do here. (myself included)

Cant you get a grant?

I agree with rasp... Dont stay in the hole. Go visit the school/city you really want to go to. Get a place on a course first... then figure out how to live there...you will somehow.

omg its Wagga Wagga Wagga
could be worse... could be Bowral or Dapto or something?

my car broke down in wagga wagga on the way to the grand prix in melbourne. its not the best place on earth, you gotta go to a place that inspires you, it'll be worth it, there is always a way.
Do it!

hey PyroVesten
well it sounds like you are in a bit of a design vacuum but at least you've got into the tafe course right? so you've got one year left and then you are going to a better city? in the mean time you're just going to need to push yourself if you think your course is under par. it's a good skill to learn cos in the real world you have to motivate yourself anyway.
i did my design degree in perth, then when i finished i figured i had as much chance getting work in london as i did in perth as it was so hard to start out in a city where as you say a few companies monopolised the work.
came to london, took a while to get settled but worked as a photographic assistant then as a graphic designer, first few companies went bust, freelanced for a while etc but to cut a long story short now i work as an interactive tv designer at the bbc and i really enjoy it and am learning loads.
self motivation and curiosity have been the things i've relied on most so if you can learn that in wagga wagga then you'll be learning the most important bits.

Thanks guys. Yeah just to clarify, I'm stuck here till the end of my tafe course (lack of money being the cause), at which point I'm getting the fuck outta here and doing further study in Sydney, Melbourne of even Brizzy.
It just blows that I can't get a better education while I'm here, or pick up some design work. I tell ya, some of the dipshits in my course.....

Does your course have a work term?
My final semester of school was a 4 month work term. I pretty much picked where I wanted to live and then hit up all the decent shops looking for a placement. Got me a job when I was done and got me to the city I wanted to live in.

Work term? Ha. There's nowhere to work here :P

Just keep this in mind:
Whether you graduate or don't graduate, either way you'll be done with school eventually.
